How Much Does the Variety of Scenery and the Different Percentages of Audience Occupancy Affect the Indoor Acoustics at the National Theater of Zagreb?

Abstract: The performance of opera and the post-pandemic slow recovery of the public, who have been hesitant to return to frequent attendance of cultural venues, has inspired the authors to analyze the acoustic behavior of the National Theater of Zagreb, by reflecting five specific scenarios. Starting from acoustic measurements undertaken inside the National Theater of Zagreb without any scenery in place, this research study compares the main acoustic parameters simulated with the scenery of Tosca in three different act… Show more

“…In this way, they participate in the process of greater social inclusion and expanding inclusivity in cities [56]. The potential for the emergence of POPS involving theaters and their activities, among other things, influences a better appreciation of cities and the public spaces that occur in them by restoring previously inaccessible spaces to the social and economic mainstream [57,58]. In Warsaw, an example of implementing the idea of POPs is the design of the Ochota Theatre, made by Janusz Marchwi ński, which fits in with its function and form in this type of space transformation (Figure 11).…”

“…Previous research studies have already used a similar technique for regular shoebox room volume [33], but the innovation of these acoustic maps consists of the visualization of the IRs in a 360 • view applied to a 19th century opera theatre with a particular volume shape [13]. On the image/video perspective, the parameter settings include the step size and frame rate, which are involved in the realization of the video flow.…”

“…Other research studies take these cultural heritage buildings as an opportunity to conduct acoustic simulations and potential improvements that can be supported with the adaptations due to compliance with the standard regulations in the field of health and safety [3]. During the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous research studies were conducted on audience attendance as the pandemic could cause a change in the habits of building users [4]. On this basis, various investigations on live virtual reality performances have been undertaken [5,6] to make theatrical performances available at a domestic price since the use of only a pair of headphones in combination with a head-mounted display (HMD) is required.…”
