How Much are Atrial Volumes and Ejection Fractions Assessed by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging Influenced by the ECG Gating Method?

Abstract: The gating method has a significant impact on atrial volume and EF measurements. Atrial EF is underestimated by using the prospective triggering technique.

“…Hudsmith et al [28], using the biplane area-length method, established values of volume similar to ours, 97 ± 27 mL for all subjects, 103 ± 30 mL for males and 89 ± 21 mL for females, with differences probably due to the need for geometric assumptions with that method. Sievers et al [29], published reference diameters for the 2, 4 and 3-chamber views slightly lower than ours, probably due to the fact that they used prospective triggering, which yields lower values, as reported by the same authors [30]. Anderson et al [31] published that a LA area < 24 cm 2 and a depth < 5.8 cm included the upper 95 th percentile of the normal range.…”

“…The left atrial volumes were measured as a marker of diastolic function using the biplane area length methods . To evaluate the myocardial perfusion at rest, the myocardium was divided into equiangular segments .…”

“…At the end of this chapter a summary of normal values for atrial dimensions, areas, and volumes is given based on a recent study by Maceira et al (2010) of 120 healthy subjects covering six decades. For a more extensive overview including indexed age-and gender-specific values, we refer to specific literature (Jarvinen et al 1994a, b;Anderson et al 2005;Sievers et al 2005;Hudsmith et al 2005Hudsmith et al , 2007Tsao et al 2008). Besides a reservoir function, the atrium also has a conduit function, and has an active contractile function.…”
