How miRNAs can protect humans from coronaviruses COVID-19, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV

Abstract: Viral diseases cause significant harm to human health and often cause high mortality. In the past twenty years, humanity has undergone infection by SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome), MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome) and COVID-19 coronaviruses, which spread from animals to humans and from person to person. These diseases have led to large economic losses. To fight coronaviruses and other viruses, it is proposed to use miRNAs, which regulate protein synthesis at the translational level.MirT… Show more

“…The use of miRNAs for this purpose requires with the fulfillment of a number of conditions. One of the most important point is that the selected miRNA must highly specifically bind to the target miRNA of the viral genome (gRNA) or parts of its genome [17].…”

“…Además, otra estrategia propuesta para el desarrollo de tratamientos para la COVID-19 es la basada en microARNs como reguladores de la síntesis Pág. 694 de proteínas a nivel traduccional, ya habiéndose identificado por métodos bioinformáticos microARNs potenciales para este tipo de terapia, los cuales se planea incorporar en exosomas y administrar por vía intravenosa o por inhalación para inhibir la reproducción del virus en los pacientes (49) .…”

“…However, SARS-CoV escapes from miRNA-mediated defence through the manipulation of host miRNA machinery [ 22 , 23 ]. Additionally, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 express short RNAs that resemble miRNAs and could impact upon host house-keeping or immune defence processes [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. More recently, several studies have proposed that host miRNAs bind SARS-CoV-2 transcripts [ 24 , 26 , 27 ].…”

More recently, several studies have proposed that host miRNAs bind SARS-CoV-2 transcripts [ 24 , 26 , 27 ]. However, the relevance of host miRNAs for inhibition of viral replication is relevant only if the identified miRNAs are expressed in target host cells.…”
