How many response categories are sufficient for Likert type scales? An empirical study based on the Item Response Theory

Abstract: The current study investigates the optimum number of response categories for the Likert type of scales under the item response theory (IRT). The data was collected from university students attend to mainly the faculty of medicine and the faculty of education. A form of the “Social Gender Equity Scale” developed by Gozutok et al. (2017) was prepared, which had 3, 5 and 7-point response categories. The graded response model (GRM) was used for item calibrations. The results of the study have revealed that using a… Show more

“…However, the measurement spectrum was somewhat wider for longer responses. In addition, Aybek and Toraman (2022) reported that the response categories (5 and 7) provided more test information and reliable measurements similarly at a broader range of ability than the ones with less response categories. Therefore, researchers are recommended to use a 5‐point response category, considering the ease of responding and accuracy and precision of estimates.…”

“…A 5-point Likert scale was recommended by scholars in the scale development process because it provides an easier response process for respondents but does not pose a major disadvantage compared to the 7-point Likert scale in terms of reliability ( 78 ). The applied Likert scale ranges from strongly disagree to strongly agree, coded as 1 to 5, respectively.…”

“…The questionnaire was then revised based on the findings of the preliminary study and distributed to 200 more respondents. This study employed a Likert scale with sevenpoint response categories since this scale could provide more information function than a scale with fewer response categories and is more effective in terms of measurements and reliability functions (Aybek & Toraman, 2022). The items of the questionnaire used in this study were taken from several previous studies related to greenwash, green perceived risk, green perceived value, and green trust variables as shown in Table 1.…”
