How Many Atomic Layers of Zinc Are in a Galvanized Iron Coating?

Abstract: This article describes an experiment using a novel gasometric assembly to determine the thickness and number of atomic layers of zinc coating on galvanized iron substrates. Students solved this problem through three stages. In the first stage, students were encouraged to find a suitable acidic concentration through the guided-inquiry approach. In the second stage, students performed a procedure using a gasometric device associated with data processing. In the third stage, students were provided hints to answer… Show more

“…Many undergraduate laboratory experiments focus upon reaction kinetics, the behavior of acids, ,,, and their reaction with metals. , Often, practical work makes the assumption that students already have a fundamental knowledge of the subject and therefore are not required to explain observations at a simple level. However, in supporting the development of trainee teachers, it is of vital importance that they develop the skills and ability to explain concepts in an appropriate way, at a level accessible to their school students.…”

“…Chemical education journals also have published several inquiry-based approaches for the general chemistry laboratory. These approaches include: Web-based inquiry study (19), graduate teaching assistant training and inquiry-based instruction (20), a guided-inquiry format for general chemistry laboratory (21), inquiry-based classroom activity (22), discovery learning (23), prompted inquiry-based learning (24), exploring zinc atomic layers in galvanized iron coating (25), and inquiry-based instruction effects (26). Moreover, designing an experiment is an important requirement for an inquiry-based approach to chemical investigation.…”

“…In most cases chemistry students learn problem-solving skills through virtual situations in the classroom rather than in the laboratory. However, real-world problem solving has recently been integrated into general chemistry experiments (6,(24)(25). In our activity students mimic a scientific research process through inquiry-based learning to solve a real-world water-quality problem.…”

“…Zinc determination in complex mixtures has been widely explored in undergraduate laboratory experiments using gravimetric 13 and gasometric 14 analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, 15 complexometric 1,2 and precipitation 16 with 4% of global child morbidity and mortality. 18 Zinc supplements are available commercially and, when properly used, maintain sufficient zinc levels in the body.…”

“…Zinc determination in complex mixtures has been widely explored in undergraduate laboratory experiments using gravimetric and gasometric analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, complexometric , and precipitation titrations. From a biological point of view, zinc plays a vital role in the immune function of organisms and its deficiency is associated with 4% of global child morbidity and mortality .…”
