How is auxin linked with cellular energy pathways to promote growth?

Abstract: Auxin is the 'growth hormone' and modulation of its concentration correlates with changes in photosynthesis and respiration, influencing the cellular energy budget for biosynthesis and proliferation. However, the relative importance of mechanisms by which auxin directly influences photosynthesis and respiration, or vice versa, are unclear. Here we bring together recent evidence linking auxin with photosynthesis, plastid biogenesis, mitochondrial metabolism and retrograde signalling and through it we propose th… Show more

“…The inhibitory effect of rol1 on photosynthetic carbon dioxide assimilation rate (Fig. 4) was not expected because elevated auxin levels more commonly increase plastid size and number, stomatal aperture, and photosynthetic rate, although the relationship of auxin levels to primary metabolism is poorly understood (Tivendale and Millar 2022). The impact of the reduced assimilate is unclear because although mean rol1 root and plant sizes were the smallest (Fig.…”

“…Salicylic acid is a plant hormone, which is mainly stored as SAG in plants, and its increased content is beneficial to improve plant growth and enhance its defense and disease resistance [ 44 , 45 ]. OxIAA is an indoleacetic acid oxide, and at its proper concentration, can improve plant growth and photosynthesis [ 46 ]. tZOG is one of the plant cytokinins, which is beneficial to improve the proliferation capacity of plant cells, as well as to improve the photosynthetic capacity of plants [ 47 ].…”

“…A large portion of these genes correspond to members of the SAUR family that are involved in growth control mediated by auxin ( Stortenbeker and Bemer, 2018 ). Auxin plays an essential role in shoot growth and biomass production ( Tivendale and Millar, 2022 ) and heat stress-induced thermomorphogenetic responses, including hypocotyl elongation and leaf hyponasty ( Gray et al., 1998 ; Küpers et al., 2020 ). Thus, a decrease in auxin signaling might explain, at least in part, the observed decrease in shoot biomass.…”
