How Gamification Affects Software Developers: Cautionary Evidence from a Natural Experiment on GitHub

Abstract: We examine how the behavior of software developers changes in response to removing gamification elements from GitHub, an online platform for collaborative programming and software development. We find that the unannounced removal of daily activity streak counters from the user interface (from user profile pages) was followed by significant changes in behavior. Long-running streaks of activity were abandoned and became less common. Weekend activity decreased and days in which developers made a single contributi… Show more

“…On DEV users describe, in plain text, their skills and preferences on their user profiles and indirectly via their posts. Data from DEV could be used to revisit important social factors in software engineering including gender gaps and disparities [32]- [34], the relationship between geography and collaboration [35], [36], and the effects of gamification on user behavior [37]. Of particular interest is the site's social network, the structure and dynamics of which could be contrasted with developer networks on GitHub [38].…”

“…An adaptation to an industrial setting, and also to the context of open source projects development will be tackled as future work. Nevertheless, in [21], some perverse effects of gamification elements introduced in collaborative development platforms, such as GitHub, are analysed. This sort of issues must be taken into account when adapting to that settings.…”

“…Moreover, when moving from Bugzilla to GitHub, the communication between maintainers and contributors in the issues also increased. Moldon et al (2020) focused on how developers' behavior was impacted by the removal of the daily activity streak counters from the user profile. The results show that the developer activity decreased on weekends compared to weekdays.…”
