How farmers’ non-agricultural employment affects rural land circulation in China?

Abstract: To clarify the impact of non-agricultural employment on rural land circulation in China, we built logit models using the Chinese Household Income Project 2013 dataset, which includes 18,948 household samples over 15 provinces, 126 cities and 234 counties of China in 2013. We use the proportion of non-agricultural income, the proportion of non-agricultural laborers and non-agricultural fixed operating assets to reflect the degree of the households' dependence on agriculture, the degree of the households' labore… Show more

“…Labor force is a basic element of agricultural production arrangements: the availability of an abundant labor force can induce farmers to choose labor-intensive crop varieties for planting [ 52 ]. However, household size will also influence the rural-to-urban labor migration, which will impact the agricultural labor force [ 54 ]. Moreover, the food consumption is dependent on the size of the family [ 53 ], which will be taken into consideration when deciding on planting structures.…”

“…The proportion of migrant workers (abbreviated to “migrant”) . Migration of workers away from the farmer’s labor force will reduce the agricultural labor force of the family; thus, farmers may choose to use machinery to replace the lost labor force and consequently consider planting technology-intensive crops [ 54 ].…”

“…Kumari and Singh’s (2009) suggested efforts are being made to identify the critical factors that mitigate poverty at large, specifically in India. Since the 1970s and progressively in the 2018s, developing economies have used multidimensional techniques to promote growth and to negate the effect of poverty (Diao et al , 2019; Wang and Wang, 2020). Consequently, progressive governments in India have put in place poverty alleviation programmes to support rural areas through the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) started in 1970.…”

“…(4) Other control variables. To enhance the comparability of the empirical results with the existing literature, we include the following control variables that are used in related research [18,21,45,46]: The per capita cultivated land area (mu) in primary industries in each province is calculated to reflect the man-land relationship (manland). The cultivated land area is from the China Rural Statistical Yearbook, and the number of laborers employed in primary industries is from the China Agricultural Management Statistical Annual Report.…”

“…Finally, in the current incomplete Chinese rural land market, the substitution of man-land relations for price channels to influence agricultural production organization choices may still exist (e.g., Lin's relative marginal productivity channel). Referring to related empirical studies [18,21,45,46], we use the following regression in Equation (12).…”
