PurposeThe aim of this article is to propose and test a structural model of relationships between generic and specific competencies and entrepreneurial competencies in order to assess students' learning.Design/methodology/approachThe study was carried out on a sample of 337 students enrolled on the entrepreneurship specialisation of the final bachelor's degree project course on the Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. A questionnaire was designed to gather information on students' perception of their level of acquisition of the different groups of competencies. The partial least squares (PLS) multivariate technique was used to analyse the model.FindingsThe results confirm that there are significant relationships between the different groups of competencies. Specifically, it shows that generic competencies influence specific competencies and that there is a strong relationship between systemic and professional competencies and entrepreneurial competencies. It also shows that the experience variable contributes positively to different competency groups, while the gender and age variables have no effect on the development of entrepreneurial competencies.Practical implicationsThe study provides relevant information to the academic world on different factors that affect competency development.Originality/valueThe analysis provides an innovative research and contributes knowledge on entrepreneurial competency acquisition, providing an answer to whether generic and specific competencies influence entrepreneurial competencies.

Different profiles for the assessment of student theses in teacher education

Previous research shows a discrepancy between different teachers’ assessment of student theses. This might be an even larger problem in the context of teacher education, since teacher trainers originate from different disciplines. This study aims to investigate how different assessors prioritise between criteria for assessment. Criteria were elucidated using repertory grid interviews with teacher trainers. These criteria formed the basis for a web-based Qsort that was distributed to teacher trainers at three different universities. The 66 teacher trainers in this study represented different disciplines, but were all engaged in the supervision and examination of student theses from teacher education programmes. The analysis revealed three different factors, which have been labelled: logic text structure as product, research process as product and results as product. The differences may not be explained by the background (e.g. discipline, university or gender) of the teacher trainers. Together, these three factors explain why teachers assessing student theses may accentuate different personal criteria. Hence, this might impact on their grading practice and also the interrater reliability.

Sedan början av 2000-talet har ett examensarbete varit en viktig del av grundlärarutbildningen. Tidigare forskning om examensarbeten har till största delen uppmärksammat skrivarprocessen, så som lärarstudenters och handledares erfarenheter av uppsatsskrivande eller så har frågan om examensarbetarnas kvalitet varit fokus för forskningen. Till skillnad från tidigare forskning syftar denna studie till att bidra med kunskap om vilka aspekter av didaktik, och vilka ämnen, som kan identifieras i examensarbeten. Det empiriska materialet består av 264 examensarbeten från två universitet i Sverige författade under 2010-talet. Gällande frågan om didaktik var huvudresultatet att större delen av examensarbetena handlade om undervisning av ett ämne i klassrummet. Eftersom ämnesdidaktik har fått en allt starkare ställning i svensk lärarutbildning och forskning under 2000- och 2010-talet var detta inte ett särskilt förvånande resultat. Gällande de ämnen som examensarbetena handlade om var huvudresultatet att mer än hälften relaterade till ämnesområden med koppling till lärande, undervisning och organisering av undervisning. Generellt så valde lärarstudenter att undersöka problem i relation till praktiska aspekter av lärararbetet i sina examensuppsatser. Detta är i överensstämmelse med tidigare forskning som har uppmärksammat att studenter i grundlärarutbildningen tenderar att socialiseras mot ett praktiskt orienterat lärarutbildningsideal.
