“…Much of the empiric evidence regarding the link between APN nursing home practice and positive resident outcomes relies on multiple reports of a single study of the EverCare demonstration project in five geographic locations, using administrative data in large part (Kane et al, 2001;Kane et al, 2002;Kane et al, 2004). Some studies were limited by the use of retrospective chart review (Burl, Bonner, Rao, & Khan, 1998) or by a survey that failed to report reliability or validity of the survey instrument (Abdallah, 2005).…”

“…In-service education, rounding with physicians, staff, and other health care teams, consultation, and administrative responsibilities constituted 50% of the total time APNs spent in nursing homes; yet none of these services were billable (Kane, Flood, Keckhafer, & Rockwood, 2001). Similarly, EverCare APNs spent time coaching and teaching nursing home staff, communicating with families, and coordinating care (Abdallah, Fawcett, Kane, Dick, & Chen, 2005).…”

“…Evaluation of the demonstration project provides empirical data needed for decisions about continued governmental support of collaborative models of care delivery for long‐stay nursing home residents. Previous studies of the EverCare demonstration project have focused on how the NPs spend their time (Fama & Fox, 1997; Kane, Flood, Keckhafer, & Rockwood, 2001), nursing home residents’ satisfaction with the EverCare program (Kane, Flood, Keckhafer, Bershadsky, & Lum, 2002), and effects on medical care utilization (Kane et al, 2003) and quality (Kane, Flood, Bershadsky, & Keckhafer, 2004). Ryan (1999) identified roles performed by EverCare NPs, but she did not validate these roles empirically.…”
