To analyze success and failure of offensive sequences and the adopted offensive method in under-15 (U-15) and under-17 (U-17) soccer players. Methods: The sample was composed of 218 offensive sequences performed by U-15 and U-17 players selected from 28 matches, being 18 matches of an Italian team and 10 matches of a Brazilian team. All offensive sequences which ended in finalization were selected for the analysis. Using observational methodology, an adapted ad hoc observational instrument was built with the variables "number of players involved", "ball touches", "passing", "duration", and "corridor changes". Next, offensive actions were classified into three offensive game methods: counterattack , quick attack, and positional attack. Results: Results revealed that teams which use positional attack expend more time constructing an offensive play, involve extra players, and change the ball corridor more often during offensive actions when compared to counterattack and quick attack (p<0.01). Moreover, offensive efficacy did not present an association with the offensive method employed (X 2 =0.47; p=0.78). Sequences that finished in success presented significantly higher values of the number of touches (p=0.02), passes (p=0.003), and duration (p=0.01) in comparison to failure. Conclusion: The findings suggest that all offensive methods adopted can be used to reach success during a game of U-15 and U-17 soccer players.

ResumL'objectiu d'aquest estudi va ser analitzar i comparar la realització de les principals accions ofensives a pilota parada (APP) -penal, córner, faltes frontals i faltes laterals-entre les dues màximes divisions del futbol espanyol. Es van analitzar 52 partits dels cinc primers equips classificats de primera i segona divisió en la temporada 2014-2015. Es va utilitzar la metodologia observacional, construint un instrument ad hoc d'observació (SOFEO-1) i registrant amb amb l'instrument Lince v.1., la qual cosa va permetre estudiar la consecució en el joc ofensiu d'aquestes accions tecnicotàctiques. Es va procedir a una anàlisi estadística descriptiva i inferencial dels resultats amb el programari SPSS 21.0, que va ser complementat amb la detecció de patrons temporals T-Patterns mitjançant el programari Theme 6.0. Es van trobar diferències estadísticament significatives (p < .05) en la realització de les APP entre la primera i segona divisió en: l'estructura defensiva del rival, els moviments de distracció ofensius i la finalització d'aquestes accions. L'anàlisi temporal de T-Patterns va corroborar aquests resultats i la poca efectivitat d'aquestes accions ofensives en ambdues divisions. AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyze and compare the effectiveness of attacking set pieces (penalties, corners, and free kicks taken from the center and sides of the field) between teams competing in the first and second divisions of the Spanish soccer league. It was analyzed 52 matches played by the top five ranked teams in both divisions in the 2014-15 season. We employed an observational methodology design in which we recorded and coded set piece actions in LINCE v.1. using an ad hoc observation instrument (SOFEO-1). We performed a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of technical-tactical set pieces actions in SPSS 21.0 and also investigated hidden temporal patterns (T-patterns) using THEME v.6.0. Statistically significant differences (p<.05) were found between first and second division teams for defensive structure of the opponent team, deceptive maneuvers in attack, and finishing of set pieces. The T-pattern analysis corroborated these results and showed the general ineffectiveness of set pieces in both divisions.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of long distance passes performed during the 2014 Brazil FIFA World Cup. All 64 matches were analyzed, however, actions performed during overtime were not included in the sample. The study defined long pass as an action made by a player from the defensive midfield aiming at passing the ball to another teammate located on the offensive field. The action result assessment followed these criteria: shots on goal, ball possession maintenance, loss of ball possession and ball possession recovery. Total long distance passes were also considered in the analysis. Throughout the tournament, 4,512 long distance passes were attempted. The main findings were that 59% resulted on loss, 28% on maintenance and 12% on recovery of the ball possession, but only less than 1% resulted in shots on goal (F = 505.5; p<0.001; partial ƞ² = 0.76). Teams with the highest number of long pass attempts loose ball possession more frequently. There were more long distance passes at the first and at the last 15 min of matches. UEFA and Concacaf teams executed, respectively, the lowest and the highest number of long passes. The major outcome of this study is that long distance passes have low effectiveness due to the high rate of loss of ball possession, rarely creating score opportunities. The more the teams executed long passes, the more the teams lose ball possession.
