How effective is indocyanine green (ICG) in localization of malignant pulmonary nodules? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: BackgroundVideo-Assisted and Robotic-Assisted techniques become constantly more prominent practice in thoracic surgery for lung cancer. Furthermore, the increased frequency in detection of small lung cancers makes the intra-operative identification of these cancers even more challenging. Indocyanine Green (ICG) is one of the most commonly used dyes that assists surgeons identify small lung cancers intra-operatively. Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ICG in lung cancer detection.Method… Show more

“…One commonly studied agent for FGS is ICG, which has been extensively researched in the context of pulmonary and thoracic malignancies, mesothelioma, high-grade gliomas, meningiomas, and brain metastases ( 21 - 25 ). In the detection of lung cancer, 3 main techniques for administering ICG have been identified: percutaneous CT-guided injection, intrabronchial injection, and intravenous injection ( 26 ). When locating undetectable pulmonary nodules, fiberoptic bronchoscopy or electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy is often used, with ICG being injected through intrabronchial access.…”

“…In addition, ICG visualizes the localized area better than MB and IC in patients with pulmonary anthrax. 13 , 17 Gkikas et al 18 used ICG as a CT localization marker with a high success rate (96.7%) and a false negative rate of only 2.4% (26/1089). A common cause of failure was ICG spillage during localization and subsequent spread in the chest cavity, with a complication rate of 15.2% (150/989) during hospitalization.…”

“…Meanwhile, photosensitizers could generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under corresponding wavelength excitations of light irradiation, which could induce mitochondria-mediated cell apoptosis, inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and activate antitumor immunity. , Therefore, phototherapy possesses a series of potent characteristics such as minimally invasive action, low toxicity, and nondrug resistance compared to traditional OTSCC therapy. Indocyanine green (ICG) as an NIR fluorescent dye possesses both photosensitive and photothermal properties, which should sufficiently perform PTT and PDT effects in the treatment of OTSCC . However, the drawbacks of this hydrophilicity photosensitizer such as instability in blood circulation, low cellular uptake efffciency, and weak tumor-targeting capability greatly limit its application in anticancer strategies. , Currently, the biomimetic nanoparticle modification strategy has attracted more and more attention.…”
