How does the strength of ties influence relationship quality in Chinese megaprojects? The mediating role of contractual flexibility

Abstract: PurposeThis study aims to explore the influence of the strength of ties (strong ties and weak ties) on contractual flexibility (term flexibility and process flexibility) and relationship quality among stakeholders in a megaproject network.Design/methodology/approachThis study, via a questionnaire survey, collected 380 valid responses from megaproject professionals (including project managers, department managers and project engineers). The data were analyzed using least squares structural equation modeling.Fin… Show more

“…We searched the UN Comtrade database for the world trade volume of automotive products in the home countries of the sample firms to build the trade network to measure strength, disparity and density of firms’ home country in the trade network. First, according to Freeman’s measure of node degree in undirected networks and other measure about strength of ties, the number of nearest neighbors of a node and the weights between a node and its nearest neighbors are considered in this paper (Freeman, 1978; Hu et al , 2021). The specific calculation method is as follows (“ω” represents the volume of trade): …”

“…This study uses the inputmediator-outcome model to explore the impact of network position on inter-team conflict and project success in megaprojects (Ilgen et al, 2005). This model has been widely accepted and adopted in the construction domain (Hu et al, 2021;Le et al, 2020;Wu et al, 2019;Zhang and Huo, 2015). In this research, the input variable is network position; the mediating variable is inter-team conflict; and the output variable is project success.…”

“…The influence of strength of ties on project performance has been examined in several studies (e.g. Wu et al , 2020; Hu et al , 2021). In addition, several studies have examined the relationship between friendship ties and group decision-making in projects (e.g.…”
