How Does Locally Produced Feed Affect the Chemical Composition of Reared House Crickets (Acheta domesticus)?

Abstract: The interest in eating insects has grown in Western countries. Insects are on the market in some European countries due to the reinterpretation of EU legislation. In this study, house crickets (Acheta domesticus) were reared with two homemade and one commercial feed with different chemical compositions. Commercial chicken feed, which contained the highest levels of protein and minerals, produced the biggest and the most protein- and mineral-containing crickets. The protein content varied between 50.2 and 64.2 … Show more

“…According to Yahya et al (2013) the protein requirement for Arowana fish is no different from the protein requirement for carnivorous fish such as catfish or others, therefore using crickets as natural food for Arowana fish is the right choice because crickets have a high protein content. This is in accordance with the statement of Pastell et al (2021) crickets contain more than 50% protein content and contain high levels of lysine and methionine.…”

“…However, the effect of this type of feed on fish performance has been poorly studied. Tran et al (2015), Jayanegara et al (2017), Taufek et al (2018a), Fialho et al (2021), Jeong et al (2021) and Pastell et al (2021) reported that cricket contains more than 50% protein, a high level of lysine, and methionine. However, while these are the most limited amino acids in fish feed, fish still need them for physical development (NRC 2011;Taufek et al2018a).…”
