This paper investigates the structural change of the major economies through the lens of the leading global corporate R&D investors. Moreover, we explore the relationship between R&D intensity, capital intensity and profitability and R&D investment growth for young and old firms. Contrary to common understanding, our results show that in the EU the R&D distribution between sectors has changed – similar to the USA; however, the USA has experienced a very strong shift towards ICT-related sectors, which makes its change more visible. Both the EU and the USA have experienced a slower pace of structural change than emerging economies. Our results also indicate that capital and R&D intensity may have a complementary effect on long-term R&D performance, which can vary according to a firm’s age. The specific nature of the sample allows us to link our results to the Schumpeterian waves of innovation and the changes of techno-economic paradigms rather than alternative interpretation of management literature. Policy implications are discussed accordingly.

This study puts forward a logical framework for green innovation network analysis, which includes a spatial dimension, a relational dimension, and a systems dimension. Here, we put forward some basic research ideas concerning the optimization and regulation of green innovation networks in terms of the systems dimension and we investigate the micro-dynamic mechanisms of green innovation network expansion using a spatial econometric model. Our main research results are as follows: The efficiency of green innovation in the Yangtze River Economic Belt has improved significantly, however, the gap between cities has gradually increased, and a problem of efficiency regression has emerged. The green innovation network has changed from the primary stage dominated by Edge Network to the rapid growth stage dominated by Supporting Network, and formed a complex network pattern with diversified hierarchical structure. Node symmetry is helpful in forming more extroverted connections and promoting the expansion of green innovation networks. Node proximity and connection symmetry inhibit the growth and development of networks, and knowledge flow cooperation networks can accelerate the evolution of green innovation networks. Finally, this paper holds that we should combine the actual development needs, emphasize the basic principles of differentiated development, and construct the development pattern of regional collaborative innovation. This can also provide a theoretical reference for enriching our understanding of green innovation networks while narrowing the gap between cities.

Merger and acquisition (M&A) is an important way for coal enterprises to acquire key competitive resources and core competencies and achieve rapid growth. In the existing research, more emphasis is placed on integration policies, methods and performance evaluation, lack of theoretical analysis and empirical testing on the key decision-making factors and driving mechanism of coal enterprises' M&A. In this paper, a conceptual model of influencing factors and action mechanism of coal enterprise M&A is constructed, and the relationship between influencing factors, ability construction and enterprise performance of coal enterprise M&A is discussed from the perspective of dynamic ability. Based on 323 sample data of coal enterprises in key coal-producing areas in China, the research hypothesis is empirically tested by hierarchical regression and structural equation model. The research reveals that government regulation, industry competition, entrepreneurial orientation and organizational alertness have significant positive effects on coal enterprise M&A. Government regulation and industry competition have a positive impact on environmental perception and resource reconfiguration, but an insignificantly positive impact on resource integration, which also verifies the negative effect between government regulation and industry competition.
