How Does Driver Turnover Affect Motor Carrier Safety Performance and What Can Managers Do About It?

Abstract: The trucking industry is the lifeblood of supply chains. Truck driver turnover and motor carrier safety are two salient issues affecting this industry. While turnover by itself presents a challenge due to the cost of replacing drivers, it takes on additional urgency because turnover may affect motor carrier safety. However, driver turnover research has focused predominantly on identifying factors affecting turnover, thus resulting in limited understanding of how turnover affects motor carrier performance, part… Show more

“…A second way this article contributes to theory is by building on the recent work concerning motor carrier safety that has systematically devised theory concerning how various dimensions of carrier safety (1) display different relationships with hypothesized antecedents (Miller and Saldanha ; Miller et al. ,) and (2) exhibit different patterns of change over time (Miller ). Our work contributes to this literature by explaining why carriers’ growth or contraction affects driving safety and vehicle maintenance differently in a manner that receives empirical corroboration.…”

“…We include this control given evidence that carriers that use more owner‐operators exhibit problematic safety as measured by the CSA program (Miller and Saldanha ; Miller et al. ). Last, we control for carriers’ average size during the study interval by averaging the natural logged values of carriers’ average power units from 2010 to 2016.…”

“…Indeed, non‐linear effects based on the starting magnitude of different firm‐level measures has been found in other logistics‐related contexts (Miller et al. ). Therefore, we propose:H1B The effect of a supplier's bid frequency on auction invitations will decrease as the frequency of bidding increases.…”
