Motor carrier safety remains a highly relevant issue for supply chain managers and scholars because carriers’ safety affects supply chains as well as the welfare of the motoring public. This article enriches understanding regarding this topic by investigating how motor carriers’ growth or contraction since the start of the Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) program in 2010 affects their safety performance. Drawing on core principles from theories regarding internal adjustment costs from economics and nonscale free capabilities from management, we explain why carriers’ growth or contraction should differentially affect various safety metrics tracked by the CSA program. To test our theory, we assemble a multiyear panel data set for over 1,000 of the largest for‐hire motor carriers operating in the United States by melding together several different governmental data sources. We fit a series of multivariate seemingly unrelated regression models to test our hypothesized effects. Our results corroborate our theorized predictions and are robust to alternative model specifications. We conclude by detailing how this work contributes to extant theory, summarizing managerial and policy implications, highlighting limitations, and suggesting directions for further pursuit.

Buyers often procure distinct goods and services from the same supplier. Accordingly, business exchanged in one setting may affect exchanges between the buyer and supplier in other settings. We study how business procured via online business‐to‐business (B2B) auctions is affected by business exchanged between the buyer and supplier concurrent to the auctions (concurrent business). Using two transactional datasets, one with auctions held by a large buyer of transportation services over a 4‐year period and another with the buyer's transactions with suppliers over the same time period but governed by long‐term contracts, we analyze whether the contractual business affects decisions made in the auctions. We find that the buyer's auction–invitation decisions are affected by a supplier's auction performance and the presence and magnitude of the concurrent business relationship, showing that relationships still matter when buyers use online B2B auctions for procurement. After the concurrent relationship ends, auction invitations eventually cease; this effect, however, is moderated by the supplier's performance in the auctions. Concurrent business also affects supplier decisions in the form of reference prices. When a buyer and supplier have a preexisting price for the service up for auction, the supplier at times substitutes that for their bid price, with considerable heterogeneity explained by a supplier's business model, market conditions, and the recent usage of the contract price in the concurrent relationship. The business relationship external to a B2B auction significantly affects the decisions made within an auction through multiple mechanisms.

The consequences of self‐reporting biases: Evidence from the crash preventability program

Relying on firms to self-report information is an information-gathering mechanism that often results in biased measures due to the incentives of the reporting firms. What is less commonly understood is that using self-reported information for decision-making results in endogenous selection bias, which creates spurious associations between the measure being reported and factors that influence reporting. Thus, conditioning on self-reported information can lead to inaccurate evaluations of firms and bias predictions of future performance, even when the self-reported measure is not intentionally misrepresented. We examine endogenous selection bias in self-reporting regimes using directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). We illustrate the problem using data from a policy change by the U.S. Department of Transportation that allowed firms to report not-at-fault for accidents. We find that large for-hire firms are much more likely to report not-at-fault for accidents-over 40 times more likely than independent drivers-even after controlling for time, location, and weather. When comparing independent drivers with large firms, the reporting disparities make large firms appear 25% safer when using at-fault accidents versus all accidents while providing no improvement in predicting future accidents. This study highlights the consequences of poorly designed informationgathering mechanisms and the usefulness of DAGs for understanding causality in supply chain research.
