How do we incorporate patient views into the design of healthcare services for older people: a discussion paper

Abstract: BackgroundAcross the European Union costs for the treatment of oral disease is expected to rise to €93 Billion by 2020 and be higher than those for stroke and dementia combined. A significant proportion of these costs will relate to the provision of care for older people. Dental caries severity and experience is now a major public health issue in older people and periodontal disease disproportionately affects older adults. Poor oral health impacts on older people’s quality of life, their self-esteem, general h… Show more

“…Accordingly, coproduction shifts the design process away from the traditional “top-down” medical model to, instead, focus on an inductive paradigm of partnership working and shared leadership. For instance, Brocklehurst et al (2018) discuss methodological approaches , such as priority setting partnerships or the experience-based codesign. These methods facilitate partnerships between researchers, healthcare professionals and patients to produce more responsive and appropriate public services for older people.…”

“…The patient's perspective is rarely incorporated into the design and execution of multidisciplinary care [22][23][24]. In order to explore ways to structurally involve patient perspectives in the organisation of their care, we were interested in how older people themselves experience their care networks; little is known about frail older patients' experiences with, and perception of, their multidisciplinary care networks [25,26].…”

“…Dependent people may suffer from numerous health conditions, including those which affect their oral health by predisposing them to dental caries, periodontal disease and other pathologies that may lead to the loss of teeth . Rest home residents require a different approach to health care services from community‐dwelling elderly people …”

“…2 Rest home residents require a different approach to health care services from community-dwelling elderly people. 3 It is predicted that by 2020, there will be more than one million elderly people living in New Zealand, 1 most of whom will have retained some natural teeth because the trend is for fewer people to become edentulous. [4][5][6] This number of people poses challenges for providing oral health care and maintaining oral health in the ageing population.…”
