How do practitioners use conceptual modeling in practice?

Abstract: Much research has been devoted over the years to investigating and advancing the techniques and tools used by analysts when they model. As opposed to what academics, software providers and their resellers promote as should be happening, the aim of this research was to determine whether practitioners still embraced conceptual modeling seriously. In addition, what are the most popular techniques and tools used for conceptual modeling? What are the major purposes for which conceptual modeling is used? The study f… Show more

“…As motivated in the introduction, it is likely that this event log contains noise. We applied both the Heuristic Miner (HM) [8] and the Inductive Miner (IM) [9] as representatives of discovery methods supporting noise filtering on such an event log with a controlled degree of noise 1 . Figure 2 shows the resulting process mod- els in BPMN notation.…”

“…Process models are used by organizations to document, specify, and analyze their processes [1]. A process model describes the expected behavior of a process in terms of its activities (i.e., units of work) and their ordering.…”

“…Overall, a high number of process modeling techniques have been proposed since Carl Petri published his initial ideas on Petri nets in 1962 [2], and process modeling has become one of the most popular reasons for conceptual modeling [3]. Clearly, a theoretical basis is required to assist in the evaluation and comparison of available process modeling techniques.…”

“…As mentioned above, we are aware that an increase of complexity can also be paired with an increase in the understanding of the semantics of the model, which is by no coincidence one of the main purposes of ODCM. However, evidence provided by (Davies, Green, Rosemann, Indulska, & Gallo, 2006;Recker, 2010) report that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use (measured as complexity) are the two most frequently reported factors influencing the decision to continue using conceptual modeling in practice.…”
