How do people make a decision on bottled or tap water? Preference elicitation with nonparametric bootstrap simulations

Abstract: People in the United States drink almost four times the amount of bottled water than they did 20 years ago, even though tap water supplies in the United States are considered to be among the safest in the world. To understand ‘how do people make a decision on tap or bottled water’, a consumer preferences survey was administered to the Civil and Environmental Engineering students attending a US university. The survey elicited information on participants’ preferences and real life attitude/preferences and includ… Show more

“…More generally, having reviewed the research on consumer choice of tap water and bottled water, Güngör‐Demirci, Lee, Mirzaei, and Younos () identify the following explanatory factors to be relevant: water quality, health issues, taste and odor issues, convenience, price, and awareness of environmental issues. A factor that needs to be added to this list is the importance of the industry and its successful attempts to create markets for bottled water (Brei, ; Hawkins, , ; Holt, ).…”

“…As mentioned above, consumer surveys usually stress two main factors that explain an individual's preference for bottled water: dissatisfaction with the sensory properties of tap water and health-related concerns (Doria, 2006;Güngör-Demirci et al, 2016). Based on a survey of 10,000 households in 10 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Johnstone and Serret (2012) analyzed the degree of satisfaction with water quality.…”

“…However, the location of the Go2Zones may have increased a barrier for the consumer since the consumer needed to travel further to use the Go2Zone than to purchase a bottle of water. If a consumer needs to travel a further distance or spend a longer time to use the Go2Zone compared to buying bottled water, then the consumer is less likely to swap to the desired environmentally-friendly option [42,55]. For the Go2Zone to achieve maximum success, refill stations will ideally require no more effort as buying a bottle of water.…”

“…There are several studies and papers in scientific literature on bottled water industry and risk perception of the public about drinking water that ranged from technical aspects to social behavior research (Platikanov et al, 2017;Fragkou and McEvoy, 2016;Gungor-Demirci et al, 2016;Carlucci et al, 2016;Dias and Bernardes, 2016;Ragusa and Crampton, 2016). However, it could be argued that it is still not easy to find clear conclusions on the topic.…”
