How do Online Learning Networks Emerge? A Review Study of Self-Organizing Network Effects in the Field of Networked Learning

Abstract: In this article we want to understand in more detail how learning networks emerge in online networked learning environments. An adage in Networked Learning theory is that networked learning cannot be designed; it can only be designed for. This adage implicitly carries the idea that networked learning is seen as learning in which information and communication technology is used to promote (emergent) connections between learners and their peers, learners and tutors and learners and learning resources. Emergence … Show more

“…Thus, the PLN can be visualised (as seen in the PLN maps presented in this research) and also remain intangible, enabling informal learning occurring through connections with people, platforms, and information resources (Fair, 2021). Described as "learning in the wild" (Haythornthwaite et al, 2018;Schreurs et al, 2019), informal networked professional learning using PLNs is a flexible and innovative source of learning and support which may stand alone or be used to enhance formal learning opportunities (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012;Oddone et al, 2019).…”

“…In particular, the self-organizing structures that emerge in open, online communities are different from the acquired structures of family and workplace. In creating these structures, participants collaborate to define and reinforce practices that support their collective learning goals [63]. Conversation, of various types and forms, provides the connective structures for the learning network.…”
