How Different Is Cancer Control across Canada? Comparing Performance Indicators for Prevention, Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Abstract: Meaningful performance measures are an important part of the toolkit for health system improvement. The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer has been reporting on pan-Canadian cancer system performance indicators since 2009-work that has led to the availability of standardized measures that can help to shed light on the extent of variation and opportunities for quality improvement across the country. Those measures include a core set of system indicators ranging from prevention and screening, through diagnosis … Show more

“…Surgical resection and liver transplantation form the cornerstone of curative treatment for HCC [ 6 , 7 ], and patients treated with these methods had a five-year survival rate of 30–70% [ 8 ]. However, most patients are unsuitable for liver transplantation because of issues regarding donor organs, high perioperative risk, and long-term immunosuppression; thus, liver resection is widely accepted as the first treatment option for HCC [ 9 ].…”

“…In Canada, cancer surgical quality is integrated in the role of provincial cancer agencies and as such a national unified approach to cancer surgical care in general, is lacking. When it comes to thoracic surgery, clear variations exist across the country in patient outcomes [ 4 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. As a result of this, CPAC, a federally funded organization, took on the task of developing evidence-based national standards in thoracic cancer surgery which have been recently endorsed by the CATS [ 3 ].…”

“…Surgery is not integrated into most provincial cancer bodies and there are no explicit roles to oversee the systematic evaluation and regulation of cancer surgery in most provinces. As a result, there is clear variation in breast cancer outcomes across the country [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Recently, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) published pan-Canadian evidence-based surgical standards for the care of the breast cancer patient [ 6 ].…”
