How Could Self-Determination Theory Be Useful for Facing Health Innovation Challenges?

Abstract: This paper offers a presentation of the characteristics of self-determination theory (SDT) in the health context as well as attempts to identify how this theory could be useful for facing health innovation challenges. Health innovation is based on scientific advances that have more complex relationships with health. This paper encourages the use of the SDT approach to face health innovation, both for physiological and pathological processes. “…We applied a concoction of the self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000) and the social identity theory (SIT; Turner & Tajfel, 1986) to explain how student’s relatedness, social identity, group norms can drive overall satisfaction and impact their healthy and learning outcomes. SDT posits that an individual’s social environment is related to their overall well-being, based on the tenets of autonomy, relatedness, and competence (Migliorini et al, 2019; Ryan & Deci, 2000). For example, interaction through friendship making can improve one’s relatedness.…”

“…The autonomous motivation, in the interpretation of Deci and Ryan (1985) [31], represents the highest level of development, the maturity that permits one to independently adjust one's action in agreement with the surrounding environment and to reach good satisfaction in the interpersonal relationships, as well as a sense of self-realization. Literature underlines that being autonomous supports internalization of values, awareness of intrapersonal dynamics and their relation to behavior, and satisfaction of the basic psychological needs in line with the psychosocial approach [32,33].…”

“…Students with higher degrees of competence achieve better performance in the learning process [53] and are thus more willing to take up a new course or tackle new challenges. Competence refers to the feeling that one is able to act in the environment and to reach a desired goal [44]. It is employed by the current study to discuss the innovation resistance.…”
