How can we estimate QALYs based on PHQ-9 scores? Equipercentile linking analysis of PHQ-9 and EQ-5D

Abstract: BackgroundQuality-adjusted life years (QALYs) are widely used to measure the impact of various diseases on both the quality and quantity of life and in their economic valuations. It will be clinically important and informative if we can estimate QALYs based on measurements of depression severity.ObjectiveTo construct a conversion table from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the most frequently used depression scale in recent years, to the Euro-Qol Five Dimensions Three Levels (EQ-5D-3L), one of the m… Show more

“…Notably, although the older group presented less stigma and social isolation than the younger group, these were not determinants of better HRQoL within the group. In the case of depression, although it is strongly correlated with the psychological domains of HRQoL, there is evidence that it also impacts the physical domains [34‐36]. Lang et al showed similar results in older people living with HIV, correlating depression and mild cognitive impairment with poor PCS and MCS [37].…”

“…Linking assumes a nonparametric association between any two measures, aims to concord (rather than correlate) between those measures, and has no independent and dependent variables; thus, linked scores are interchangeable 31 . This method has been used extensively in prior studies 21 24 26 27 28 29 32 33 . Equipercentile linking was conducted using the equate library 31 in R 3.6.2.…”

“…Late-life depression has also been associated with cognitive dysfunction, disability, medical illnesses, and social isolation [ 7 ]. Finally, untreated depression can have serious implications on the quality and quantity of life [ 8 ].…”
