Abstract: SUMMARY  The current management of patients with clinically defined ‘locally advanced rectal cancer’ often involves fluoropyrimidine-based preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by total mesorectal excision. The focus remains primarily on reducing local recurrence, and improving survival, with organ preservation an increasing target.
