Bay Sivash was a hypersaline lagoon but after construction of the North Crimean canal, it shifted to a brackish water state. In 2014, the canal was closed; a salinity increase started. In 2018 and 2019, plankton sampling was conducted in the bay at salinity from 30 to 100 g/L. A decrease in taxonomic diversity and total abundance was observed. Before November of 2018, Harpacticoida and chironomid larvae were the most common and abundant groups. Different stages of Artemia were consumed by invertebrate predators and fish at that time. In November 2018, Artemia stages contributed more than 90% to total zooplankton abundance at all sites excepting with salinity lower than 55 g/L. In June–July 2019, adult Artemia were at all sites with salinity higher than 82 g/L when there was no suppression by predators. A self‐sustaining Artemia population in the bay may recover in 2 or 3 years, when the average salinity would reach 80–90 g/L; total abundance of the active Artemia stages may reach 3000–5000 ind. M−3 between April and August. The lagoon may become one of the world main habitats of Artemia having a significant impact to provide world's supply by its cysts.

Behavior of Gammarus aequicauda (Crustacea, Amphipoda) during predation on Artemia (Crustacea, Anostraca): New experimental results

Gammarus aequicauda and Artemia spp. are abundant crustacean species in Crimean hypersaline lakes. G. aequicauda preys on Artemia but there was no quantitative data on this before the current study. Predation of G. aequicauda on adult Artemia was studied in experiments with two different approaches evaluating (a) the time balance of the feeding process and (b) the grazing intensity. The threshold prey concentration, when consumption began to increase with increasing concentration, was approximately 15 ind./L in 200-ml vessels and about 5 ind./L in 500-ml vessels. When the Artemia abundance reached 20-25 ind./L, there was no further influence on the gammarid consumption rate. There was a significant negative correlation between the consumption rate of gammarids and Artemia abundance. According to study results, an individual G. aequicauda may eat up to 20-24 Artemia/day. Our study suggests that (a) G. aequicauda is an omnivorous species and can significantly suppress populations of its prey. (b) The two experimental approaches used to study the feeding of gammarids on Artemia produced similar results, and both may be used to quantitatively assess relations in a "prey-predator" system. (c) The abundance of predators and prey, as well as the experimental vessel volume, may influence the feeding rate. (d) The presence of plant food resources such as the leaves of Ruppia does not influence on the predatory feeding rate of G. aequicauda. (e) The rate of prey consumption by G. aequicauda is not constant and depends nonlinearly on prey and predator abundance. (f) Cannibalism occurs in the presence of plant resources only, but not in the presence of Artemia. (g) Other gammarids react to the capture of Artemia by one of them. They swim up to the successful individual and try to take some part of the prey.

Filamentous green algae Cladophora spp. are cosmopolitans inhabiting waters with different salinity, from freshwater to hypersaline. Eutrophication of marine and inland waters results in the huge development of filamentous green algae, which reach high biomass and occupy large areas in different water bodies. This leads to the strong negative effect on the species richness of communities, significantly reduces the aesthetic value of coastal waters, hampers the recreational use of beaches and the coastline, and complicates industrial water intake and coastal fishing. Harvesting and the use of Cladophora biomass can be an effective tool to remediate eutrophic waters. Cladophora spp. are also among the most promising subjects to use in the development of integrated multi‐trophic aquaculture; there is a big potential to use it. Aquaculture is one of the potential uses. To plan the use of a resource, business needs to know the availability and quantity of the resource, the price of the resource, as well as for what benefit and how it can be used. This review summarizes and analyses existing data to answer these questions. Cladophora biomass can be used for food for humans, livestock, cultivated fish and shrimps, as fertilizers, in the energy sector (biogas and biodiesel), and different industries. The use of Cladophora in medicine and pharmacology is one of the most profitable promising ways to utilize the biomass. This review shows that Cladophora biomass is an unlimited, low cost and valuable resource for medicine and pharmacology.
