How asynchronous video interviews are used in practice: A study of an Australian‐based AVI vendor

Abstract: With an archival data set from an Australian-based asynchronous video interview (AVI) vendor, we examined how employers implemented AVI features as a step toward understanding how AVIs can be more optimally designed. The multilevel data contained information about 2,550,105 responses from 627,999 candidates to 52,623 questions, nested within 12,105 interview templates. We found that AVIs were often used for small applicant pools (Mdn = 10 candidates per AVI) and that a majority of the AVIs comprised four to fi… Show more

“…Meanwhile, technological developments, largely delivered online, have radically increased the reach, scalability and variety of selection methods available to employers 69 . Technology-based assessments also afford candidates the autonomy to interact with prospective employers at times and locations of their choosing 70 , 71 . Furthermore, video-based, virtual, gamified and AI-based assessment technologies 3 , 72 74 have improved the fidelity and immersion of the selection process.…”

“…Finally, because candidates are increasingly interacting with systems, rather than people, their opportunities to build relatedness with employers might be stifled. A notable exemplar is the use of asynchronous video interviews 70 , 71 , a type of video-based assessment where candidates log into an online system, are presented with a series of questions, and are asked to video-record their responses. Unlike a traditional or videoconference interview, candidates completing an asynchronous video interview do not interact directly with anyone from the employer organization, and they consequently often describe the experience as impersonal 84 .…”

“…Preparation time and response time are common in AVIs (Dunlop et al, 2022). In the present study, we were interested in investigating differences in participants' reactions and behavior as a function of the interview method.…”

“…Technological advances allow delegating this prescreening step through technology‐mediated interviews (Brenner et al, 2016; Rasipuram & Jayagopi, 2018; Toldi, 2011). A growing number of organizations are interested in or already using these methods (Chapman et al, 2003; Dunlop et al, 2022; Hickman et al, 2022; Lukacik et al, 2022; Muralidhar et al, 2020; Stone et al, 2013), leading to the development of companies specialized in these new selection tools and specifically those allowing asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) (e.g., Hirevue, VidCruiter, SparkHire, MoSeeker).…”

“…And finally, the duration might also differ mostly due to the complexity of the respective instrument. Most AVIs contain about five questions with an overall duration of about 15 min (Dunlop et al, 2022). Online tests vary widely in their length, whereas the time required to prepare and upload online application documents mostly depends on whether one has the required documents ready and in the right format.…”
