How are moral foundations associated with empathic traits and moral identity?

Abstract: We examined the relationship between moral foundations, empathic traits, and moral identity using an online survey via Mechanical Turk. In order to determine how moral foundations contribute to empathic traits and moral identity, we performed classical correlation analysis as well as Bayesian correlation analysis, Bayesian ANCOVA, and Bayesian regression analysis. Results showed that individualizing foundations (harm/care, fairness/reciprocity) and binding foundations (ingroup/loyalty, authority/respect, purit… Show more

“…In two studies, Smith et al ( 2014 ) reported significant positive associations between internalization and political liberalism. Finally, Dawson et al ( 2021 ) observed positive relationships between internalization and the individualizing moral foundations of harm and fairness, and a similar relationship between symbolization and the binding foundations (loyalty, authority, and purity). Building upon this pattern of findings, our results are highly suggestive of a stable relationship between each aspect of moral identity and political ideology.…”

“…Bayesian analysis can provide us with more direct information about whether a specific hypothesis of interest is likely to be accepted given evidence [26]; in the same vein, we can also learn about to what extent a specific model is more likely to be the case compared with other candidate models given evidence as well [27]. Once Bayesian GLM is performed with BayesFactor , we can examine the Bayes Factor (BF M0 ) of each model quantifying to what extent the model of interest, Model M, is more strongly supported by data compared with a null model (Model 0) [25].…”

“…Thus, if our interest is exploration of the best model among all possible candidate models, conventional regression analysis could not be an ideal solution. Bayesian analysis can provide us with more direct information about whether a specific hypothesis of interest is likely to be accepted given evidence [26]; in the same vein, we can also learn about to what extent a specific model is more likely to be the case compared with other candidate models given evidence as well [27]. Once Bayesian GLM is performed with M against Model 0, 2log(BF M0 )≥ 6 presence of strong evidence, and 2log(BF M0 )≥ 10 presence of very strong evidence.…”
