How and why species are rare: towards an understanding of the ecological causes of rarity

Varina E. Crisfield,
F. Guillaume Blanchet,
Ciara Raudsepp‐Hearne
et al.

Abstract: The three‐dimensional rarity typology proposed by Rabinowitz in 1981, based on geographic range, habitat specificity, and local abundance, is among the most widely used frameworks for describing rarity in ecological and conservation research. While this framework is descriptive and is not meant to explain the causes of rarity, recent advances in ecology may be leveraged to add explanatory power. Here we present a macroecological exploration of rarity and its underlying causes. We propose a modification of Rabi… Show more

“…Step 1 of the methods, the choice of the SDMs and thresholds used will depend upon the data set, its biases and the objectives of the study (Crisfield et al, 2024;Guisan et al, 2013;Jeliazkov et al, 2022;Robinson et al, 2011). A tradeoff between omission and commission rate does need to be made in conservation and management plans (Jeliazkov et al, 2022;Liu et al, 2005;Loiselle et al, 2003).…”

“…Finally, assessment of the accuracy of data-poor models can be challenging due to over-dispersion, zero-inflation and model overfitting (Breiner et al, 2015;Jeliazkov et al, 2022;Sofaer et al, 2019). Presence-only models have been used to deal with unbalanced data, but disregarding absence points can lead to loss of information, including where the species has not been observed and sampling effort (Crisfield et al, 2024;Guillera-Arroita, 2017).…”

“…Phytoplankton comprise diverse photosynthetic microorganisms that form the base of aquatic food webs and contribute substantially to global biogeochemical cycles [25]. Many studies show that phytoplankton guilds are commonly characterised by dominance effects [26,27], while the main contribution to biological diversity is given by rare species [28,29], but very few addressed the ecological role of rare species, which remains unclear [30].…”
