How alcohol drinking affects our genes: an epigenetic point of view

Abstract: This work highlights recent studies in epigenetic mechanisms that play a role in alcoholism, which is a complex multifactorial disorder. There is a large body of evidence showing that alcohol can modify gene expression through epigenetic processes, namely DNA methylation and nucleosomal remodeling via histone modifications. In that regard, chronic exposure to ethanol modifies DNA and histone methylation, histone acetylation, and microRNA expression. The alcohol-mediated chromatin remodeling in the brain promot… Show more

“…Several human evidences have shown that chronic or binge alcohol consumption as well as alcohol exposure during development are a main inducing-cause of brain changes (110) and mental retardation in both adults and children (88, [111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119]. As for the gestational alcohol consumption, the plethora of effects in children induced by ethanol are described as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (120)(121)(122)(123).…”

“…For this reason, medical authorities recommend no alcohol during pregnancy or while trying to become pregnant; this is important also for the fathers . Indeed, it has been shown that small amounts of alcohol do not cause gross morphological abnormalities, even though they may induce behavioral and memory impairments and reduced brain volume . Alcohol may easily cross the blood brain barrier and both directly and indirectly may disrupt a developing brain affecting brain cell growth, nervous circuitries, and brain areas physiology by potentiating also oxidative stress .…”
