While conflict-induced forced migration is a global phenomenon, the situation in Colombia, South America, is distinctive. Colombia has ranked either first or second in the number of internally displaced persons for 10 years, a consequence of decades of armed conflict compounded by high prevalence of drug trafficking. The displacement trajectory for displaced persons in Colombia proceeds through a sequence of stages: (1) pre-expulsion threats and vulnerability, (2) expulsion, (3) migration, (4) initial adaptation to relocation, (5) protracted resettlement (the end point for most forced migrants), and, rarely, (6) return to the community of origin. Trauma signature analysis, an evidence-based method that elucidates the physical and psychological consequences associated with exposures to harm and loss during disasters and complex emergencies, was used to identify the psychological risk factors and potentially traumatic events experienced by conflict-displaced persons in Colombia, stratified across the phases of displacement. Trauma and loss are experienced differentially throughout the pathway of displacement.

BackgroundMost internally displaced persons (IDPs) live in low-income countries and have experienced war. Few studies have assessed their psychosocial needs and disability. We carried out a comprehensive assessment of perceived needs, self-reported health, and disability among IDPs in Nepal and examined factors associated with disability.MethodA cross-sectional survey among 290 IDPs in Nepal was conducted between June and July 2003. We used the World Health Organization’s Disability Assessment Schedule-II (WHO-DAS II) with additional local items to assess disability symptoms and a separate checklist to identify their perceived needs. Depression and anxiety symptoms were measured using the Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL-25), while the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist Civilian Version (PCL-C) was used to assess Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms.ResultsDifferent perceived needs such as financial help (70%), housing (40%), food and education for their children (20%) were expressed by the IDPs. Self-reported health status was strongly associated with distress and disability scores. Factors independently associated with disability were higher age, self-reported health, depression, anxiety but not PTSD. There was good correlation between WHO-DAS II and the locally identified items of disability measurement.ConclusionsThe reporting of findings only about psychiatric symptoms is insufficient in studying the mental health of displaced and potentially traumatized populations living in low-income countries. Assessments of perceived needs and factors associated with disability give a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying needs among crisis populations, and this can inform intervention programs. Depression and anxiety should be treated effectively to avoid disability.

Adolescents as students spend their times more in school, so interaction with people in school could affect their socio-emotional development. In achieving academic achievement, the teacher has a significant role for them. Teacher gives expectation based on students' behavior and attitude in class. Based on previous studies, different teacher expectation towards students could be one of the risk factors that trigger common adolescents' mental health problem, anxiety. This study tried to investigate the relationship between anxiety and perceived teacher expectation on high school students in Jakarta. This study used The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-25) to measure anxiety and Expectations for Student Achievement (ESA) Related Teacher Practices subscale to measure perceived teacher expectation. This one-shot study conducted in five high schools in five district areas of Jakarta and 764 first grade high school students participated. The result indicated that there is no relationship between anxiety and perceived teacher expectation on high school students in Jakarta. This finding revealed that teacher's expectation is not the risk factor of high school students' high anxiety in Jakarta. Therefore, other school-based risk factors should be investigated in the future to figure out the threat of adolescents' mental health.
