This study examines how the smoking behavior of household head impacts the food insecurity status of household in South Africa, with a focus on smoking behavior transition. The study used the fifth wave of the 2017 National Income Dynamics Study survey. Additionally, the smoking transition variable was computed using smoking status in waves 3 and 5 of the survey. Foster-Greer-Thorbecke food insecurity index, descriptive statistics, and logit regression techniques were deployed in the study. Surprisingly, the analysis shows that households headed by current smokers have a lower prevalence of food insecurity (compared to households whose heads are nonsmokers). Similarly, household food insecurity prevalence is lesser for homes whose head initiated smoking behavior or remained a smoker compared to those whose head remained a nonsmoker or transition to nonsmoking. Nevertheless, the findings from the applied logit regression suggested that household food insecurity significantly increases when a household head is a current smoker and a consistent smoker. The finding indicates that household head smoking behavior does contribute to household food insecurity in South Africa. The need to address food insecurity at the household level is a compelling argument for tobacco smoking cessation or control in addition to health consequence concerns.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the Indonesian economy in almost all sectors, including the agricultural sector. The government's policy for large-scale social restrictions has an impact on farmers' household income because it disrupts the access to sales of agricultural products. The low household income reduced opportunities to meet the needs of good quality food consumption, making food security difficult to achieve. Food security is reflected in two indicators, the level of energy adequacy and the proportion of household food expenditure. The aim of this research are to analyze income, food security and determinant factor of food security. The research was conducted in Trosono Village, Sekaran District, Lamongan Regency. It analyzed household food security using the Jonnson and Toole model. Further, factors influencing food security were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. This research found that (1) the average income of watermelon farming reached IDR 23,496,465 per hectare. Additionally, the research revealed that (2) watermelon farming households fell into the vulnerable (46.5%), the secure (23.2%), the insecure (20.9%), and the less secure (9.3%) categories. Finally, it was found that (3) several variables, such as the number of family members, the head of the family's education, income, rice expenditure, and maternal education, had a significant effect on the energy adequacy rate. The study reccomends farmers to hold technology counseling to increase their income, also there is a need socialization about the importance of regulating balanced, nutritious, and diverse food consumption patterns to increase mother knowledge to improve the nutritional status of their families.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the agricultural sector, both in terms of trade, prices, and the decline in farmers' income levels. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, food security is something that the government must pay attention to so that there is no food crisis. If farmer households have not realized food security, it won't be easy to create food security at higher levels such as the village, district, provincial, and national levels. This study aims to analyze food security based on EAR and SFE values and determine the effect of socioeconomic factors on household resilience. Determination of the research location was determined purposively, and the number of samples was taken by cluster sampling. The analytical method uses the Jonnson and Toole model to determine household food security and multiple linear regression analysis to determine the effect of socioeconomic factors on EAR. The results of the food security analysis show that 51.7% of households with energy consumption >80% and expenditure of 60% are categorized as food vulnerable. The results of the analysis of socio-economic factors that can affect EAR are income, number of dependents in the family, length of education of housewives, and age of the head of the family with a confidence level of 80%. The analysis results show that most shallot farming households are in a food-insecure state.
