House Dust Mite Allergy Under Changing Environments

Abstract: Environmental variations induced by industrialization and climate change partially explain the increase in prevalence and severity of allergic disease. One possible mechanism is the increase in allergen production leading to more exposure and sensitization in susceptible individuals. House dust mites (HDMs) are important sources of allergens inducing asthma and rhinitis, and experimentally they have been demonstrated to be very sensitive to microenvironment modifications; therefore, global or regional changes … Show more

“…Not only due to outdoor pollution such as fine dust, harmful solids, liquids, or gases [228], but also due to indoor molds as result of insufficient ventilation in energy efficient homes [229]. Finally, there is a clear increase in the allergen production of house dust mites and pollen leading to more exposure and sensitization in susceptible individuals [230]. All together it must be clear that there is much more known about other causes of increasing allergies worldwide than simply excessive cleanliness as suggested in the hygiene hypothesis.…”

“…HDMs are major allergens known to induce allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. 28 Sensitization to HDM, particularly toDermatophagoides , has increased greatly with rapid industrialization in many countries, [29][30][31][32] as has the prevalence of CU. 3,17 There are several reports on the relationships between HDMs and CU.…”

“…Reducing PM2.5 and other air pollution, which increases the inflammatory properties of some allergens, is of great urgency in today's society because it will reduce childhood asthma and even make great contributions to the whole society. [ 66 ] Moreover, education campaigns to teach children about the dangers of smoking have significantly reduced passive and active exposure to tobacco and raised awareness of disease prevention.
