Abstract-Wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard are becoming increasingly popular and widely deployed. It is likely that WLAN will become an important complementary technology for future cellular systems and will typically be used to provide hotspot coverage. In this paper, the complementary use of WLANs in conjunction with mobile cellular networks is studied. We identify the fairness problem between uplink and downlink traffic flows in the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function and then propose an easy solution that can be implemented at the access point (AP) in the MAC layer without modification of the standard for stations (STAs). This solution aims at providing a controllable resource-allocation method between uplink and downlink traffic flows and adapting the parameters according to the dynamic traffic load changes. The proposed solution also enhances the system utilization by reducing the probability of frame collision.Index Terms-Fairness, hotspot, IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF), wireless local area network (WLAN).

Self healing systems are considered as cognation-enabled sub form of fault tolerance system. But our experiments that we report in this paper show that self healing systems can be used for performance optimization, configuration management, access control management and bunch of other functions. The exponential complexity that results from interaction between autonomic systems and users (software and human users) has hindered the deployment and user of intelligent systems for a while now. We show that if that exceptional complexity is converted into self-growing knowledge (policies in our case), can make up for initial development cost of building an intelligent system. In this paper, we report the application of AHSEN (Autonomic Healing-based Self management Engine) to in OKKAM Project infrastructure backbone cluster that mimics the web service based architecture of u-Zone gateway infrastructure. The 'blind' load division on per-request bases is not optimal for distributed and performance hungry infrastructure such as OKKAM. The approach adopted assesses the active threads on the virtual machine and does resource estimates for active processes. The availability of a certain server is represented through worker modules at load server. Our simulation results on the OKKAM infrastructure show that the self healing significantly improves the performance and clearly demarcates the logical ambiguities in contemporary designs of self healing infrastructures proposed for large scale computing infrastructures.

Two-tier networks, comprising a conventional cellular network overlaid with shorter range hotspots (e.g. femtocells, distributed antennas, or wired relays), offer an economically viable way to improve cellular system capacity. The capacity-limiting factor in such networks is interference. The cross-tier interference between macrocells and femtocells can suffocate the capacity due to the near-far problem, so in practice hotspots should use a different frequency channel than the potentially nearby high-power macrocell users. Centralized or coordinated frequency planning, which is difficult and inefficient even in conventional cellular networks, is all but impossible in a two-tier network. This paper proposes and analyzes an optimum decentralized spectrum allocation policy for two-tier networks that employ frequency division multiple access (including OFDMA). The proposed allocation is optimal in terms of Area Spectral Efficiency (ASE), and is subjected to a sensible Quality of Service (QoS) requirement, which guarantees that both macrocell and femtocell users attain at least a prescribed data rate.Results show the dependence of this allocation on the QoS requirement, hotspot density and the co-channel interference from the macrocell and surrounding femtocells. Design interpretations of this result are provided.
