Future networks will pave the way for a myriad of applications with different requirements and Wi-Fi will play an important role in local area networks. This is why network slicing is proposed by 5G networks, allowing to offer multiple logical networks tailored to the different user requirements, over a common infrastructure. However, this is not supported by current Wi-Fi networks. In this paper, we propose a standard-compliant network slicing approach for the radio access segment of Wi-Fi by defining multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) per Access Point (AP). We present two algorithms, one that assigns resources according to the requirements of slices in a static way, and another that dynamically configures the slices according to the network's conditions and relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The proposed algorithms were validated through extensive simulations, conducted in the ns-3 network simulator, and complemented by theoretical assessments. The obtained results reveal that the two proposed slicing approaches outperform today's Wi-Fi access technique, reaching lower error probability for bandwidth intensive slices and lower latency for time-critical slices. Simultaneously, the proposed approach is up to 32 times more energy efficient, when considering slices tailored for lowpower and low-bandwidth devices, while increasing the overall spectrum efficiency.

Living in a smart home is an entirely new experience, which enhances our everyday life. Many manufactures and internet of things service providers developed their own smart home services from which the customer can benefit from running a software over his smartphone or tablet. Today, it is becoming increasingly complex for the homeowner to control and manage the growing number of heterogeneous home connected devices through a multitude of available services. Several researchers proposed to improve the home area network design by introducing the software defined networking approach. Although, the software‐defined network (SDN) approach has many advantages, combining it with other approaches like slicing and network function virtualization can give more benefits such as improving the quality of service and the quality of experience, the management, and the control of the network. In this review, we present and discuss recent works that improve the design of the home area network considering SDN or a combination of SDN with slicing and network function virtualization.

Abstract-Dense Small Cell networks are considered the most effective way to cope with the exponential increase in mobile traffic demand expected for the upcoming years and are one of the foundations of the future 5G. However, novel architectures are required to enable cost-efficient deployments of very dense outdoor Small Cell networks, complementing the coverage layer provided by macro-cells. In this regard, two important challenges need to be solved to make this vision a reality: i) increased traffic dynamics, which are translated into more frequent handovers, and ii) cost-efficient deployment of large number of Small Cells. In this paper we propose and evaluate SENSEFUL, an novel architecture addressing the two problems highlighted above: Software-Defined Networking (SDN) as the key technology to promote adaptability to a varying environment and provide efficient mobility solutions in the dense access layer, and novel wireless backhauling technologies where traditional wired connectivity does not meet cost/efficiency restrictions.
