Hot Jupiters with relatives: discovery of additional planets in orbit around WASP-41 and WASP-47

Abstract: We report the discovery of two additional planetary companions to WASP-41 and WASP-47. WASP-41 c is a planet of minimum mass 3.18 ± 0.20 M Jup and eccentricity 0.29 ± 0.02, and it orbits in 421 ± 2 days. WASP-47 c is a planet of minimum mass 1.24 ± 0.22 M Jup and eccentricity 0.13 ± 0.10, and it orbits in 572 ± 7 days. Unlike most of the planetary systems that include a hot Jupiter, these two systems with a hot Jupiter have a long-period planet located at only ∼1 au from their host star. WASP-41 is a rather yo… Show more

“…Thanks to this detection, it was proposed as a target for the K2 mission. In the meantime, the radial-velocity monitoring of the system unveiled a second, long period gas giant (Neveu-VanMalle et al 2016). Becker et al (2015) analyzed the K2 data and announced the presence of two super-Earths, one inner to the hot Jupiter, and one between both gas giants.…”

“…Further, WASP-47 comprises a hot Jupiter, a nearby super-Earth, a nearby Neptune, and a more distant Jupiter. The inner three planets are known to transit and the orbit of the hot Jupiter is nearaligned (Hellier et al 2012;Sanchis-Ojeda et al 2015;Becker et al 2015;Neveu-VanMalle et al 2016). It seems likely that disc migration operated in both of these hot-Jupiter systems.…”

“…Because of this, Hα has been used by several authors (e.g. Pasquini & Pallavicini 1991;Montes et al 1995;Cincunegui et al 2007a,b;Robertson et al 2013Robertson et al , 2014Neveu-VanMalle et al 2016). The parameters used for our H α analysis can be found in Díaz et al (2016a).…”
