Climate change is a critical environmental issue and is a recommended core concept in the Ecological Society of America's 4-Dimensional Ecology Education framework. Limited work describes K-12 students' conceptions of the biotic impacts of climate change, yet research is lacking to explore undergraduate students' conceptions on this topic. Our goal was to describe undergraduate student conceptions of the biotic outcomes of climate change, and characterize how these student conceptions of animal responses to climate change align with accepted scientific ideas. We used an interpretive qualitative research design and interviewed 13 undergraduate students who were enrolled in either an introductory biology or general ecology course. Through two independent codings of the same dataset, we separately addressed each of our research goals. Prior to this study, we identified three general biotic outcomes from climate change, which were confirmed by outside experts: changes to an animal's Growth and Survival, their Reproduction, or their Distribution. Our student interviewees as a whole mentioned all three of these outcomes, and most individuals mentioned all three in their responses. Additionally, we found that most student ideas were aligned with Scientific conceptions, while a third of student ideas contained some scientific conceptions but were incomplete. Only a small percent of conceptions voiced in our sample were identified as alternative conceptions that did not align with accepted scientific ideas. These findings are important for educators who teach climate change, as they suggest that undergraduate students come to our classes with productive resources; however, our findings also identify concepts where students may struggle or enter classrooms with a more incomplete understanding.

Egyre mélyülő környezeti válságba sodródunk. A problémák egy része már nem elkerülhető, de mérséklésükben a pedagógusoknak igen nagy szerepük kellene legyen. Ugyanakkor az ezzel kapcsolatos esetleges felismerés nem alakítja egyformán a szemléletformálás lehetőségeiről alkotott vélekedésünket. E helyzet feltárására egy online kérdőíves felmérés szolgált, amelynek kitöltésében 256 magyar pedagógus vett részt. Az elemzés során kiderült, hogy túlnyomó többségük fontosnak tartja, hogy tanóráin környezettudatosságra való nevelés és szemléletformálás is történjen. A szaktanárok személyes példáin keresztül bizonyítható, hogy bármely szaktantárgy órai keretein belül van lehetőség a környezettudatosság fejlesztésére – ezt a kitöltők kitüntetett többsége fontosnak és a pedagógusoktól elvárhatónak is tartja. Tízből kilenc alkalmazott már ilyen jellegű specifikus feladatokat az óráin, viszont csak tízből három vett részt az iskolán kívüli programokban, szervezőként vagy támogatóként a témakörben. Azok, akik nem alkalmaznak ilyen módszereket, elsősorban ismeret-, idő- és erőforráshiányra hivatkoznak, illetve többek szerint az efféle „külsős” programok szervezése nem tartozik a feladatai közé. Ugyanakkor a szakirodalmi források rámutattak arra, hogy az iskolán kívüli programok segítik a diákok elméleti ismereteinek gyakorlatban történő alkalmazását, és olyan kulcsélményeket szerezhetnek, melyek nagyban hozzájárulnak szemléletük formálásához.

The climate problem today caused damage to infrastructures and many other living elements among mankind. As the prospected future leaders, students need to understand and to respond the effects of climate change. A person with climate literacy may enhance their ability and capacity to face climate challenges in the future. Climate literacy is the understanding of the influence of self and society on the climate. This research is conducted to give a general picture of climate literacy among high school students in Surabaya and each indicator in climate competency aspects. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The research instrument used in this research is a climate literacy test. The valuation of climate literacy capacity of the students being done by giving scores manually from the test answers according to the scoring guideline in the scoring rubric and achievement results with categories as very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. The research samples are 107 high school students at level XI in SMAN 22 Surabaya (Public High School 22 Surabaya). According to the research, the students’ indicator in scientific identifying is low with a score percentage of 48.9%. The students’ indicator in explaining the scientific phenomenon is moderate with a score of 74.5%, while students’ indicator score in using scientific evidence is moderate with 68.6%. It could be said that high school students in SMAN 22 Surabaya as a whole have a moderate climate literacy capacity with a percentage score of 64%.
