Hot electron generation in laser cluster plasma

Abstract: A new mechanism is proposed that leads to an efficient hot electron generation in a laser cluster plasma. The mechanism is similar to the usual induced inverse bremsstrahlung. Under the action of the laser field, electrons are escaped from the clusters, then they scatter on the positively charged ionized clusters and gain energy. An analytical expression has been obtained for the transfer cross section at the elastic scattering of free electrons on the ionized clusters. This expression is exploited to calculat… Show more

“…Energy is absorbed resonantly when the normalized effective oscillation frequency becomes unity (Kundu & Bauer, 2006b). Apart from resonance absorption, various other energy absorption mechanism like vacuum heating (Brunel, 1987), collision-less resonance absorption (Kostyukov & Rax, 2003) and scattering at the cluster potential (Smirnov & Krainov, 2003) have been also suggested. Although various energy mechanisms have been proposed, resonance absorption is still believed to be the main method for energy absorption.…”

“…Vacuum heating, originally developed by Brunel for planar geometry, has been extended for three-dimensional ͑3D͒ objects such as clusters by Greschik et al 4 They studied nonresonant energy absorption by outer electron ionization of clusters in the short laser pulse regime ͑few laser cycles͒. Collisionless resonance absorption 15 and scattering at the cluster potential 16 have also been considered, among others.…”

“…Simple estimates show that collective inverse bremsstrahlung or, equivalently, coherent collisional absorption makes the leading contribution. It should be mentioned that the idea of collective scattering dates back to 1997 and was recently used to explain hot electron generation from clusters [8].…”
