Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda)

Abstract: Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the I… Show more

“…This phylogenetic separation, indicated by a deep split between IWP and AEP clades, is well-documented for corals (Fukami et al 2004), echinoids (Lessios 2001;Lessios et al 1999Lessios et al , 2001Lessios et al , 2003, fishes (Bowen et al 2001;Streelman et al 2002;Floeter et al 2008;Cooper et al 2009), hermit crabs (Malay and Paulay 2010), and molluscs (Meyer 2003(Meyer , 2004Williams and Reid 2004;Ozawa 2004, 2007;Duda and Kohn 2005;Latiolais et al 2006;Williams 2007;Claremont et al 2008;Frey and Vermeij 2008;Reid et al 2008Reid et al , 2010Kirkendale 2009;Malaquias and Reid 2009;Reijnen et al 2010). Paleontological evidence indicates that the split was already evident during the Late Oligocene, before the Tethys seaway linking the two realms was closed in the Early Miocene (19 Ma) and definitively ceased to exist after the Middle Miocene (Langhian, 16 Ma) (Harzhauser et al 2002(Harzhauser et al , 2007Harzhauser 2009).…”

“…nov., and additional ones that are expected to be found during future surveys . Should new fieldwork be organized, it is recommended to search also for cryptic organisms associated with octocorals, such as parasitic gastropods belonging to the Ovulidae (Reijnen et al 2010) and commensal shrimps belonging to the Palaemo-nidae (Snijders & Fransen 2010). The inclusion of symbionts in biodiversity surveys would give a more complete image of the biodiversity.…”

“…As stated in the Distribution sub-section above, the gastropod seems to have been already present in the North Sea for a couple of years. Newer records verify its recent appearance in different North Sea regions (Taekema, 2005;Rowley, 2008;Reijnen et al, 2010;Høisaeter et al, 2011;Schrieken et al, 2011). Since there are no reports from the eastern English Channel and the shallow parts of the southern North Sea, where the water column is mixed during winter and low bottom temperatures reach the seafloor, these are first indications towards its spreading inside the North Sea along currents with warmer Atlantic water.…”

“…In Rowley (2008), X. patula is reported from the east coast of the UK without the time of record-the coordinates were later taken from Schrieken et al (2011). Reijnen et al (2010) report it from the Dutch part of the North Sea, but according to Schrieken et al (2011), these records are from the British exclusive economic zone (EEZ). We suppose them to be the specimens mentioned in Taekema (2005), since the coordinates appear to be the same.…”
