Host specificity and experimental assessment of the early establishment of the mistletoe Phoradendron crassifolium (Pohl ex DC.) Eichler (Santalaceae) in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in southeast Brazil

Abstract: Mistletoe establishment relies heavily on a seed reaching a proper host plant. Small frugivorous birds usually disperse large numbers of mistletoe seeds. However, in the field, mistletoes are absent from some potential available hosts. We investigated whether the mistletoe Phoradendron crassifolium has some preferences for specific host trees in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in southeast Brazil. We surveyed 397 tree individuals of 50 species within 25 families. Seven of those species (14%) bore P. crassifolium… Show more

“…In studies conducted by Messias et al (2014) with the germination of diaspores without epicarp, Phoradendron crassifolium under natural conditions (on different hosts) obtained average values (31%) that were lower than the ones observed in this study with P. mucronatum. …”

“…In order to evaluate mistletoe-plant compatibility (i.e. plant suitability) and to quantify establishment and growth rates of mistletoe among experimental plants (Yan 1993b;Roxburgh & Nicolson 2008;Messias et al 2014;Okubamichael, Griffiths & Ward 2014;Luo et al 2016), we planted seeds of D. caribaeus on branches of selected tree species. We selected 11 locally common and phylogenetically disparate tree species that share avian frugivores with D. caribaeus at the study site (see Carlo & Morales 2016…”
