“…There is large conidial diversity between the Neonectria and Cylindrocarpon genera (BRAYFORD, 2004;CHAVERRI et al, 2011), with respect to presence or absence of microconidia, macroconidia, chlamydospores, and number of septa. Variation in number of septa can be associated with factors such as nutrition, relative humidity, and temperature (FLACK & SWINBURNE, 1977). Conidium length and number of septa may vary with glucose, carbon concentration and initial medium pH, nitrogen source, and culture age (HARDING, 1975).…”

“…(CASTLEBURY et al, 2006;CHAVERRI et al, 2011;WEBER, 2014). The causal agent was originally named Nectria ditissima in 1865 (FLACK & SWINBURNE, 1977) and is already well spread worldwide (SANHUEZA, 1998;BOGO et al, 2008). In Brazil, EC was first reported in a nursery in Vacaria municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul at 1998(SANHUEZA, 1998.…”

“…Nectria spp. are usually saprotrophs, but in favourable conditions they can cause canker or bark necrosis on many tree species (Flack and Swinburne, 1977; Butin, 1995).…”

“…Native to eastern North America, the fungus is most notable for the extensive scarring caused by perennial cankers on Betula (birch) species and black walnut (Juglans nigra) (Spaulding et al 1936). In addition to causing disease on Malus (apple) and Pyrus (pear) trees in orchards (Flack & Swinburne 1977), N. ditissima is associated, along with its sister species, Neonectria faginata, with beech bark disease (Cotter & Blanchard 1981;Houston 1994). Neonectria ditissima produces both asexual and sexual spores (conidia and ascospores, respectively) in nature (Lortie & Kurtz 1963), but virtually nothing is known about the relative contributions of each in creating new infections, nor about the dispersal range.…”
