“…Sweet cherry being the most commonly grown stone fruit species in the country was found not infected by PPV, consistent with its previously reported absence in sweet and sour cherry in the country ( Kamenova et al, 2013 ). According to Sihelska et al (2016) PPV-C and PPV-CR strains have the strictest linkages with sweet and sour cherry under natural condition. With the experimental transmission of PPV-Rec and PPV-M strains to mahaleb cherry ( Milusheva, 2008 ), and reported PPV-M infection of cherry in Croatia ( Mikec et al, 2008 ) and in the Czech Republic ( Navrátil et al, 2008 ), the possibility of adaptation of other PPV strains to these Prunus species exists.…”

“…So far, 10 strains of PPV have been recognized and named: PPV-D (Dideron [12]), PPV-M (Marcus [12]), PPV-EA (El Amar [13]), PPV-C (Cherry [14]), PPV-Rec (Recombinant [15]), PPV-W (Winona [16]), PPV-T (Turkey [17]), PPV-CR (Cherry Russian [18]), PPV-AM (Ancestor Marcus [19]) and PPV-CV [20]. These strains were distinguished using gene sequence differences and also biological or epidemiological differences [21].…”

“…Based on differences in complete genome sequences and phylogenetic analysis, ten PPV strains (D, M, C, EA, Rec, W, T, An, CR, CV) are recognized to date [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]. They may differ in antigenic and epidemiological properties, geographical distribution, pathogenicity, and host preference, although clear links between such features and molecular affiliation is not evident for each strain [ 6 ]. Under natural conditions, PPV-C, -CR, and -CV were only found on sour ( Prunus cerasus ) and sweet ( P. avium ) cherries and considered the cherry-adapted strains.…”
