Hospitalizations for opioid‐related overdose and timing of concurrent opioid and benzodiazepine use: A nested case‐control study

Abstract: Background Concurrent opioid and benzodiazepine (BZD) use is a prevalent high‐risk prescribing behavior that increases the risk of opioid overdose. However, there is limited evidence on the relationship between timing of concurrent use and risk of opioid overdose. Objective To evaluate the likelihood of opioid‐related overdose across levels of duration, recency, and daily dose of concurrent use. Design A nested case‐control study was conducted using Truven MarketScan claims data (2009–2018). Participants Comme… Show more

“…Overdose deaths related to benzodiazepines increased in the United States between 2019 and 2020 from 9711 deaths to 12 290 deaths with the majority (66%) involving benzodiazepines in combination with synthetic opioids other than methadone [38]. These figures confirm previous reports on the increased risk of opioid overdose by simultaneous use of opioids and benzodiazepines [39][40][41][42]. In the United States between April-June 2019 to April-June 2020, overdose deaths involving illicit benzodiazepines increased 520%; in the first 6 months of 2020, 93% of benzodiazepine-involved deaths also involved opioids, and 67% involved illicitly manufactured fentanyls [43].…”
