Hospital Resources May Be an Important Aspect of Mortality Rate among Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19: The Paradigm of Greece

Abstract: For critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who require intensive care unit (ICU) admission, extremely high mortality rates (even 97%) have been reported. We hypothesized that overburdened hospital resources by the extent of the pandemic rather than the disease per se might play an important role on unfavorable prognosis. We sought to determine the outcome of such patients admitted to the general ICUs of a hospital with sufficient resources. We performed a prospective observational stu… Show more

“…The rate of intubation and hospital mortality of intubated patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in our ICUs at “Evangelismos” Hospital, Athens, Greece, during the first wave of the pandemic was reported to be 82% and 39%, respectively ( 1 ). Since then, changes in pharmacological treatments for severely ill patients with COVID-19 have been incorporated into clinical practice, both by their use (corticosteroids [ 2 ] and remdesivir [ 3 ]) and by stopping them (e.g., hydroxychloroquine).…”

“…Other settings in our country have reported a lower mortality (32%) for overall ICU admissions during the first wave, highlighting the effects of an overburdened medical system on mortality rates rather than the severity of the disease per se (15).…”

“…Other settings in our country have reported a lower mortality (32%) for overall ICU admissions during the first wave, highlighting the effects of an overburdened medical system on mortality rates rather than the severity of the disease per se (15). However, in a recently published Swedish registry-based cohort study of patients admitted from 6 March to 6 May 2020, the ICU mortality was even lower (23.1%) (16).…”

“…Intensive care with sufficient hospital resources may reduce the mortality rate of severely ill patients. 3 However, invasive intervention in those patients with irregular immunity may lead to other complications, and death is inevitable in some patients. 4 Monitoring these cytokines provides clinicians with early signs of an overactive immune response and enables timely intervention.…”
