“…As for the question of which profession should hold leader positions in the health care system, this is an opportune moment for the nursing profession and nursing leaders. It is important to find a commonly accepted framework to help nursing leaders carry out their work (Traynor 1994) and have our professional voice heard in health care (Brandi & Naito 2006, Davidson et al. 2006, Dopson & Fitzgerald 2006).…”

“…Nurse managers in Africa, Asia and the Middle-East are balancing their nursing, educational (Muller 1989, Bezeuidenhout et al 1999) and managerial activities (Kim 1989, Malan & Muller 1997. The entire health care system is undergoing major changes, and nurse managers play a key role in the pursuit of cost-effectiveness (Wong 1999) and in trying to develop the model of patient-centred care and empower the nursing staff (Brandi & Naito 2006). While the style of leadership has an effect on job satisfaction, staff retention and productiveness (Chiok Foong Loke 2001, Dehghan Nayeri et al 2006, nurse managers are expected to focus on their management role rather than their leadership or nursing role (Drach-Zahavy & Dagan 2002).…”

“…A close analysis of the data shows clear linkages between the sociocultural group behaviors of consensus and harmony‐making and participants' perceptions that nursing was not in control of its profession, especially as nurses are often subservient to physicians and men (Hisama, 2000). A study of senior nursing administrators showed that there was a strong patriarchal nature to health care in Japan, with physicians considered to be the greatest impediment to the advancement of the profession (Brandi & Naito, 2006). A study of novice nurses in clinical settings demonstrated that they suffered high levels of burnout, in part because they lacked the assertiveness skills to voice their opinions (Suzuki et al.…”

“…Other international nurse scientists have also applied a feminist theoretical lens to their research. Brandi and Naito (2006) explored Japanese female nurse administrators’ experiences in their patriarchal work environment, and Savage (2006) uncovered first time mothers’ experiences of learning and knowing in pregnancy and childbirth. Mkaudawire‐Valhumu and Stevens (2007) examined young Malawian women's experiences as domestic workers, and discussed how feminist theory was an outstanding guide for the investigation of health and human rights because of its deep regard for women's experiences.…”
