Hospital Inpatient Falls across Clinical Departments

Abstract: Background: Inpatient falls are common hospital adverse events. We aimed to determine inpatient fall rates in an urban public hospital and analyzed their characteristics across clinical departments. Methods: The study was conducted in a 350-bed urban, multi-specialty public hospital in the 2013–2019 period. Patient data were retrieved from the hospital’s standardized falls reporting system. “…Additionally, people who fall often experience depression/anxiety (28%), mobility issues (70%), decreased independence (41%), reduced quality of life, and in severe cases the falls are fatal [ 10 , 12 , 58 ]. Globally, the incidence of falls is estimated at 2.2 per 1000 patients in a year [ 59 ], while in Poland, the annual fall incidence rate was 6.48 per 1000 patients during the 2013–2019 period [ 13 ]. Every year, approximately 37.3 million falls are severe enough to require immediate medical attention [ 12 ].…”

“…Additional intrinsic risk factors which could play a role include age, gender, comorbid conditions (particularly cardiovascular disease), and medication use [ 9 11 ], in part explaining the increased tendency for falls in elderly patients [ 12 ]. Furthermore, slippery flooring, hospital equipment failures, staff shortages, and insufficient training and teamwork are extrinsic factors which may be implicated in some cases as well [ 13 ].…”

“…Although falls occur in all wards of Polish hospitals [ 9 ], there are only a few publications on this topic. However, limited evidence demonstrates their correlates and the effectiveness of generally used preventive interventions, which mainly concern geriatric wards [ 5 , 10 ].…”

“…Regarding the prevalence of inpatient falls, the existing literature focused mainly on falls in elderly ( 23 29 ) and patients in general hospitals ( 5 , 11 , 30 – 34 ). Fall ratio's (expressed as falls per 1,000 patient days) between 1.70 and 3.56 were found, with a lower incidence on surgical than non-surgical wards ( 30 – 33 , 35 ).…”
