This entry reviews the predominantly textual evidence for ancient Egyptian magic in its historical and cultural context. On the basis of the nature of the evidence, three chronological periods are distinguished: the Pharaonic (third to first millennium bce ), the Greco‐Roman (first to fourth century ce ), and the Christian (from the fourth century onward). The first period is characterized by the embedding of magic in the scholarly world of the traditional temples; the second, by religious, linguistic, and cultural variety, and the interaction of foreign and Egyptian traditions; the third by a deliberate and profound process of Christianization.

Appropriation: A New Approach to Religious Transformation in Late Antiquity

In this article, I propose the concept of “appropriation,” widely used in cross-cultural contexts, as a new approach to the process of religious transformation in Late Antiquity. This approach has the advantage that it encompasses the entire spectrum of individual responses to the impact of Christianity that characterizes the period. It is thus a particularly dynamic concept, as it accurately takes into account the interactive nature of the process and views it “from the bottom-up,” highlighting human agency. The variety of responses is illustrated by three case studies from Egypt — literature, monumental architecture (temples and churches), and magic — which can be regarded as exemplary for studying similar aspects of the religious transformation process in other areas of the (Eastern) Roman Empire. In each of these cases, the topic has until quite recently been viewed in terms of a “pagan” vs. Christianity framework, which has now been replaced by a more complex picture that exposes to the fullest extent the different forms of appropriation.

Within the ‘market of healing’ of Christian Egypt (here broadly considered as the fourth through twelfth centuries CE), ‘magical’ practitioners represent an elusive yet recurrent category. This article explores the evidence for magical healing from three perspectives – first, literary texts which situate ‘magicians’ in competition with medical and ecclesiastical healing; second, the papyrological evidence of Coptic-language magical texts, which provide evidence for concepts of disease, wellness, and their mediation; and finally confronting the question of how these healing traditions might be understood within the methodologically materialistic framework of academic history, using the concepts of placebo and healing as a performance.
