Hornbill: A Self-Evaluating Hydro-Blasting Reconfigurable Robot for Ship Hull Maintenance

Abstract: Maintenance of ship hull involves routine tasks during dry-docking that includes inspection, paint stripping, and re-painting. Among those, paint stripping is always seen as harmful for human operators and a time-consuming task. To reduce human risk, cost, and environmental cleanliness, the shipping maintenance industries started using robotic solutions. However, most of such robotic systems cannot operate fully autonomous since it requires human in the loop to monitor the cleaning efficiency. To this end, a n… Show more

“…Considering the previous clarifications, it can be highlighted the work from several authors that have studied the application of Industry 4.0 technologies to common shipbuilding tasks, like hull blasting [27], hull maintenance [28] or welding [29]- [32]. One of the few papers that describes an Auto-ID system for the shipbuilding industry is [33], where the authors make use of a Bluetooth-based positioning system to locate workers in a shipyard with roughly one meter of accuracy inside a workshop.…”

“…Cleaning requires maximum area coverage. Recently, based on the principles of autonomous area coverage, many robots have been deployed in essential life aspects such as underwater operations [ 1 ], de-mining [ 2 , 3 ], agriculture [ 4 , 5 ], painting [ 6 ], rescue operations [ 7 ], tiling robotics [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], ship hull cleaning [ 11 , 12 ], benchmarking for inspection [ 13 ], pavement sweeping [ 14 ], and so on. Currently, cleaning robots for domestic and industrial markets are in heavy demand.…”
