“…Reintroduced females in this data set were 9-10 years old. More recently, in the same region, wild females <71 cm SVL and 10.5 kg were observed nesting (Portelinha et al, 2015). Therefore, in this work we test the hypothesis that size ranges of breeding females of C. latirostris exceed the minimum and maximum limits of class III established for C. yacare by Ross and Godshalk (2003).…”

“…Broad-snouted Caiman were reintroduced into wild populations in study sites: Espín, Fisco, Los Saladillos and Lucero ( Figure 1); as part of "Proyecto Yacaré" caiman management and conservation initiative. Caimans were released with an individual mark by notching tail scutes indicating release year, so age could be determined if they were recaptured Portelinha et al, 2015). The climate of the region is temperate, with a mean minimum annual temperature of 14.9 °C and maximum of 25.6 °C and an annual rainfall of 1.380 mm (information available in the web site of National Meteorological Service (SMN, 2017).…”

“…Growth dynamics of crocodilians are influenced more by the age at which first reproduction occurs than by the asymptotic size (Brisbin, 1988). Minimum reported reproductive size is 68 cm SVL for wild females (Portelinha et al, 2015) and 69 cm for reintroduced females , the latter at 7.9 years old. Using our model, we can estimate the minimum reproductive age as 8.1 ± 1.8 years, similar to that found by Moulton et al (1999) in Brazil, where caimans would begin to reproduce at 75 cm, age 8.6 years.…”

“…Crocodilians are ectothermic vertebrates that depend on external temperature for thermoregulation (Pough et al, 2003), and their thermoregulatory behavior involves different uses of the available environments to reach the body temperature for their metabolic activities (Fincatti and Verdade, 2002;Seebacher and Franklin, 2005). The thermoregulatory behavior of Caiman latirostris varies throughout the year in order to avoid extreme temperatures, which affects its use of space (Fincatti and Verdade, 2002;Bassetti et al, 2005;.…”
