Hormonal Regulation of Ovarian Bursa Fluid in Mice and Involvement of Aquaporins

Abstract: In rodent species, the ovary and the end of oviduct are encapsulated by a thin membrane called ovarian bursa. The biological functions of ovarian bursa remain unexplored despite its structural arrangement in facilitating oocytes transport into oviduct. In the present study, we observed a rapid fluid accumulation and reabsorption within the ovarian bursa after ovarian stimulation (PMSG-primed hCG injection), suggesting that the ovarian bursa might play an active role in regulating local fluid homeostasis around… Show more

“…The expression of AQP5 was previously observed in the ovary of pigs, mice and rats (Skowronski et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013, Starowicz et al 2014. The results of several studies support the regulatory influence of steroid hormones on AQP1 mRNA and protein expression in female reproductive system (Li et al 1997, Lindsay and Murphy 2006, Jablonski et al 2003.…”

“…Ovarian follicles express diverse types of AQPs depending on species (for review see Zhang et al 2012). So far, AQP5 has been found in the ovary of mice (Zhang et al 2013), rat (Starowicz et al 2014), cow (Williams 2012) and pig (Skowronski et al 2009). Notably, porcine AQP5 was immunolocalized in primary, pre-antral and antral follicles (Skowronska et al 2015), which suggests involvement of this particular AQP across all stages of follicular development.…”

“…For the local injection of VACV70 into the ovarian bursa, fourweek-old female mice were anesthetized using pentobarbital sodium (50 mg/kg), and the ovaries were surgically exposed. One ovary was injected with a mixture of 0.2 μg of VACV70 and 1 μL of Lipofectamine RNAiMAX in a total volume of 10 μL with 1× PBS using a 31-gauge insulin syringe through the ovarian fat into the ovarian bursa according to previously described procedures (Zhang et al 2013). The contralateral ovary was injected with an equal volume of PBS and 1 μL of Lipofectamine RNAiMAX to serve as the control.…”
