Hormonal homeostasis in a group of 216 aging Czech males and correlation with responses to a questionnaire of the University of St Louis

Abstract: The study confirms that the most prominent phenomenon is that of an age-related decrease in the index of free testosterone, which is indicated in particular by an increase in the level of SHBG, and by a decrease in dehydroepiandrosterone and its derivatives. No significant correlation was found between levels of hormones and single items on the questionnaire, nor with the overall score arrived at by studying the patients' data.

“…Various possible metabolic markers and mechanisms are also investigated, for instance by the team of the Department of Gerontology and Metabolism, Medical Faculty and Teaching Hospital Hradec Králové. The topic of male ageing is also explored by several teams (Hanus et al 2006;Stárka 2003). Some other research institutes focus on different organ systems, e.g.…”

“…Also in line with previous reports [9], 4.5% of men reported hot flushes, which is why we suggest that hot flushes should be regarded as a possible LOH symptom. There are also other studies [10,11] that have failed to identify a connection between LOH symptoms and circulating androgen levels. To monitor changes in LOH symptoms as well as androgens, we used the same cross-sectional study design as in 2003 in the same cohort of men but five years later.…”
